Dairy / Lactose Free Diet

There is a world of difference between dairy free and lactose free, they are however linked.

“Dairy” refers to all milk and milk products (milk, butter cream etc…} produced by mammals including cows. So to be dairy free the product or meal cannot contain milk or any part of milk.

Lactose however is an ingredient of milk, it’s the sugar component in dairy produce. So lactose free food may not necessarily be dairy free.

People who follow a dairy free or lactose free diet will usually be able to eat eggs.


Dairy free at Ffiona’s

Apart from our duck pate all our starters either are, or can be, dairy free. Obviously, all the vegan dishes tick this box but we do offer dairy free parmesan and feta cheeses and our delicious garlicky house dressing is also free from dairy.

King prawns with chilies, ginger and garlic can be prepared without butter, just using a splash of oil instead.

We do have dairy free butter, however mostly we use rapeseed or olive oil to cook with.

Thick cut hake on spiced Puy lentils with salsa verde is dairy free, the duck breast with apples and Calvados and parsnip crisps would also be a great choice. Steak can be served without butter maybe with some wild mushrooms instead.

NEWSFLASH Our famous fish and chips are dairy free (tartare sauce does have egg in it).

Then our vegan options i.e.

Sweet potato and courgetti noodles with green onion, edamame beans, pistachio pesto and Dukkha.

Also, our crispy, fried polenta on wilted spinach with roasted cherry tomatoes, micro herbs, toasted coconut curls and a tomato and chili dressing.

When ordering lamb or venison etc. some of the sauces or jus may contain butter or a splash of cream. So just let us know when ordering that you are dairy free, and most dishes can be altered to suit you.

We always offer dairy free ice creams (Jude’s vegan ices)

We have raw vegan chocolate cheesecakes too.

Brunch again offers a good choice of dairy free meals.

The full veggie breakfast, maybe substitute the halloumi cheese for vegan feta?

Sweet potato and chorizo hash and red chilies topped with 2 eggs.

The Full English would certainly tick all the boxes.

Our tasty eggs Benedict can be served without hollandaise; you can substitute with seeds and chili flakes instead.

Breakfast of champions…sirloin steak topped with 2 fried or scrambled eggs.

Our spicy Queen scramble can be prepared with vegan cheese and the green onions, pickled jalapeños, chives and mushrooms just make up a great combo, add a splash of Cholula sauce and you’ll be in heaven.

All great if you eat eggs but if you don’t, we’ve still got you covered.

There are sweet potato fries with harissa mayonnaise or our crisp, hand cut chunky chips.

Sides of ripe avocado, sautéed mushrooms, roasted sweet tomatoes etc.

The vegan breakfast bowl is delicious, but you could always add some grilled chicken or oak smoked salmon for extra protein.

There are dairy free pesto’s and beetroot hummus and of course our wonderful vegetable soup.

Our Sunday roasts are dairy free, chicken, hake or pork (whatever is on offer), potatoes and veggies, again we can easily do dairy free gravy.

We are flexible and we really want you to enjoy your food your way when you come to see us. So always make sure we know that you’re dairy free and we will do our best for you.
